Sense Perception: .. Limitations

1) Which of the problems of perception limit human knowledge the most and the least? Why? Give examples.
2) How might humans overcome these problems? What forms of technology do we use already? Do these forms have their limitations also? What other ways might we use?

Ok so the five sense have already been discussed and opinionated in terms of which is more significant to me. So on to sensory limitation and how we as humans overcome these barriers- possibly using technology.
One major limitation we have with senses is that we cant actually picture something to a full extent without having a bias to it, and with this is it could confuse us in to believing something that really we 'shouldn't' be believing. Creating a bias on nearly every picture someone sees, hears, feels, tastes, or smells can affect the way perception is experienced or filtered, and so-forth we can not always rely on senses.
Experiences and Filtering is another limitation of senses, this is because the way we percept something depends on how us as individuals filter something- not just what we see but all five senses. Smell- we filter this in a way or past experience, so if we one day, most probably as a child smelt freshly cut grass, and then smelt it again, we know that either we gained satisfaction or we didn't. Hearing something, again with the past experience, we know that we can distinguish between two sounds even if they are related- such as two voices or even if they are quite distinctive- such as a humming bird or a lorry driving past. These past experiences help us to build on the knowledge that we already know and without these experiences there is no knowledge in that particular field, just like if there is no knowledge in that field- how can there possibly be experience?
There has been distinct technology development produced to enhance these limitations of perception and these two that could be enhanced with technology are sight and hearing. However can there be other technology developments to enhance other areas of senses? Such as taste- I wonder if these could be enhanced with something... what about feeling, or smelling something- could these also be enhanced with technology?
Limitations with technology goes a long way- a very long way with some people and not others really- what if a hearing aid broke in the middle of...something really important- court.. um.

Significance of Senses...But Why?

So we all know the senses:

- Taste (5)
- Smell (3)
- Sight (1)
- Feel (4)
- Hear (2)

I've ranked from 1-5 what i feel are the most important senses, not neccesarily just for me personally, but the senses that would come in more practical for just about anything. In my eyes people take senses for advantage. Some of the dudes that are lucky enough to have all their senses dont realise that actually they are taking it for granted. I know i do. Do we realise everything we do, senses provide us with the ability to carry out that action- whatever that may be. From motor reflexes(- for example- quickly moving away your hand from the stove to prevent it getting burnt...) to seeing the most beautiful sighting ever to be displayed in front of you (whether that was a new born child, or going to the top of the Alps and looking down for instance)

1) To See. . Generally this is more important for me. Sure its very important on the scale for others, but would it be their number one? Sight is..what? the ability to see? Sure, yeah its the ability to see, but see what? The reason why this miraculous sense is so important to me is because it enables me to look at: what i've achived, to achieve, to see what i love, who i love, what i enjoy, do what i enjoy. These small things all adjoin to create great indications as to what exactly i enjoy, love and very possibly need. The first thing i do, when i enter a room, is look around, see whos there; what the atmosphere is like and more importantly what the 'obstacles' are. This is the most usuful and reliable sense for me, and if i were to loose it, i would most probably shift in to using my hearing more than anything else, which is why its my second most reliable sense.

2) To Hear. after Sight, i would use my hearing. Again with the example of walking in to a room. I first look at my atmosphere. Then i hear it. Whats going on verbally, what are people talking about, and how are they talking about it. If a studen in a room complains about how many homework assignments they've got, they're not exactly going to say it with the most upbeat voice. On the other hand, if they're talking about say something like getting a new puppy- now thats exiting! SO... that brings in why hearing is higher on the scale. Expression, expression and its ability to let one decide how to interpret. Hearing yet another sense most of us take for granted. What if one day, you just could'nt hear anything? Would'nt be half as bad as loosing the eye sight for a day, but i certainly need hearing as a symbol of alarm- meaning danger? Possibly. More along the lines of everyday or every other alam, such as birds in the morning, or a car beeping, or even a lorry coming full speed behind you.

3) To Smell. Smell for me is another important sense, this amazing sense allows one to grab a sense of cleanliness, and feel for their atmosphere. Even though, actually i loose my sense of smell alot these days because of Winter and i know what its like to actually loose the sense, and so do millions of people, i think smell is extremely significant for everyday use. Smell is there for a lot of resons and although there are so many reasons as to why one (or i) would feel that smell is needed and is quite important there is one in particular for me, which is memory. Maybe what i'm about to say is way to psychological, but for me different smells brings in differnt memories, not for every smell- but suprisingly and unconciously most. For example- a certain perfume always reminds me about my mum, and the weird thing is, is that she doesnt even wear the perfume anymore- and its the same example for my sister.

4)To Feel. Material, Jeans, Plastic, Paper, Fur, Gel, . These are generally the types of material that remind me of my family, or what i need to do. Like Gel- my brother always makes me get his hair up- so ever since- everytime i saw, smelt or felt gel it always made me think of the little bugger. Paper nearly always reminds me that i need to working- whether thats a good or a really, really bad thing- i dont know. The easiest way i feel is using my hands, and my finger tips the most. Even right now im using my fingetips to type on the keyboard, and if i couldnt feel that- it would just be too wierd. Once again though i have lost feeling in my fingertips but accidently burning it- but so not the same thing as completely loosing your sense of touch.

5) To Taste. Food. The first thing that come in to my mind when i think about the sense of taste im privalidged with, i think of food. This i think is a good example because the other day i fell slightly sick and lost my sense of taste, and automatically asked myself why im eating a peice of chocolate if i can even taste it. To me, eating that peice of chocolate seemed a litte silly that i was eating it even though i couldn't taste it. So really im my terms, im pretty much saying whats the point in eating if you cant even taste it. But taste for some doesnt just come in usuful for actually tasting something phyically. But for some reason taste comes in convienient for a lot of other things.- Swimming. Everytime i used to jump in to the pool every practise, i would always get mouth full of water- and to be perfectly honest- i loved it. But the reason as to why taste in the lowest on my little scale is because i could most probably do without it- have been without it. But i love my mums cooking so i probably couldnt live without it.

Introduction to WoK

1) We cannot carry every object about which we need to communicate. (2)
Whats the point of carrying every source of communication when you have you're main one? one or two sources of communication, is that not enought? People may say that others have different sources and therefore so do you, but that really is not true, i think its completely unnecessary to carry all of them around; and that your main source of communication should be valued: whatever that may be.

2) We need to be able to communicate about actions without actually doing them.(1)
Communication is essetial, pretty much everyones knows that, but not everyone can privilege from it. Communication in our world is taken for advantage, does someone actually get up and be thankful for being able to communicate? To be honest i really dont think people generally do that, so to be abled to communicate and doing so without the actions can be very important.

3) Abstract ideas which can only be expressed in language are an essential part of human experience.(4)
I put this as my least important statement, however this is still pretty important as it correlates with the concept of thinking and expressing about certain things, just in another way.

4) We need to be able to communicate about emotions beyond their mere expression.(3)
For someone to communicate is one thing, but communication about your emotions and expressions is another, its important to be able to talk and communicate clearly, and freely about yours and people emotions for someone to gain an outlook on you and it could help someone in a lot of ways.

Other reasons language is a necessity:

- To be able to communicate what you feel (emotion) is very important because you can help both yourself and others
- To feel some sort of connection between you and the person you are communicating with

Knowledge Communites and Inherent Limitations

-Do knowledge claims transcend different communities or cultures?

One could assume, or think that knowledge claims transcent from different communities or cultures, however, in some ways or another, one could state that people come up with these claims, and 'produce' them to become bigger, and therefore they become concepts. These need to be demonstrated or evidential to commerce in to differnt communitues or cultures to be established or confirmed.

-What differences exist between public and private justifications?

This may descend from what is 'suppose' to consist of public justification and private justification, whether either are what one wants to believe in or just what one has to believe in because they know its logically correct. Or is it? The public justifications can consist of reasonings for what goes on generally globally, such as science, typical everyday science; theories of one another, human aspects, what are we, are we real? And the Private justifications consist of more self thought judgements, these can be any that are your own theory, your own 'thing' that only you want to Believe, and do not wish to indoctrinate on others.

-To what extent might this distinction between private knowledge and public knowledge be culturally dependent?

This depends on the way one theories on culture. One could argue that both private and public knowledge comes throroughly from the cultural dependence that one has, but the other subject could argue that culture elaborates only to some extent and, what i believe is that the culture can only elaborate in to the circumstances however to some sort of extent, and this can be justified by ones theory that does not correlate with anothers.

-Does making a knowledge claim carry any particular obligation or responsibility for the knower?

This could oblige the knower to some sort of responsibility due to what the knowledge claim is that one is distributing. If one decides to prove this claim, one then then gains confidence, he one fails to do so, one may start inquiring whether their claim is correct, or will ever be correct. The kind of pressure one may start to be experiencing is whether any of their theories will be correct and will they be able to justify any of them. Responsibility...yes, obligation... possibly.

School!

In my opinion, there is a huge difference between education and indoctrinaton:

Whether you want to learn in ways or get in pumped in to your head section after section of which after certain point they can only accept the knowledge.
Education is the aparting and aquiring of knowledge through teaching and learning, most commonly and especially at schools or some kind of institution of the sort. Indoctrination is rather to teach somebody a belief, doctrine, or an ideology thoroughly and systematically, especially with desisn or plan of discouraging independent understood, though or the acceptance of other opinions an ideas.
To indoctrinate means to not aquire but to systematically impound in someones head, howver, on the other hand, to educate means to aquire the knowledge in sorts of ways.
Example: "of one had a peice of knowledge in the air, an indoctrinator would tell them to get it, learn it, know it; on the other hand an educator would simply tell one to catch the knowledge if they wish to"

School and ecouragement go very well for some, and other maybe not as much. With post experience i have gained the encouragement to ask questions and think independantly. Encouragement is enabling a person to search for themselves in some sort of form, and therefore school does this, fromt the environment your're around; to the kind of people your're around to even what you learn. Asking questions requires confidence and school gives most students this quality. As well as teaching valuable lessons like geography or psychology students learn from school how to independantly ask questions.

Schools want their students to conform obviosuly, but all students conform in their own way. Some may choose to just observe and then follow and eventually pilot situations. Schools can want students to conform at the start of a school term, when new students have enrolled; or simply in lessons and many situations where the student needs to be confident and most of all independant.

Honestly I do expect my teacher to 'know' everything there is know mostly because they are the people who have (in school) been teaching me my whole entire life and therfore its fixed in my head that they should typically know all the answers to my burning questions and will most probably be confused if they dont... However... At the age i am now i am slightly more aware that teachers are still only human and can 'know' to a certain limit and answer therefore to a certain limit.

Factoids

Three facts proven wrong

-Alcohol in all forms has been said to be 100% unhealthy and it shouldn't be consumed. Then a couple of years ago a researcher said that red wine was actually healthy for the heart but not other forms of alcohol. They had also added that all alcohol in moderation has healthy benefits to them.
-Humans evolved directly from tree dwelling apes – but actually more likely from ground dwelling apes "Our study demonstrates that our earliest ancestors did not simply come down from the trees. Rather, they evolved from an ape already adapted to life on the ground."
-Children with asthma were actually got told to stay in enclosed pool areas because the humidity was good for their asthmatic condition. Now researchers suggests that the chlorine in the air from the pools aggravates and make the asthma in the children with the condition much worse.

Three Facts

-Yawns are contagious. Well, at least 40 to 60 percent of the time. Scientists remain puzzled as to why this phenomenon occurs, though some theorize that it might have originated from a time when we used visual rather than verbal cues to coordinate social behaviour. And yawns can be passed not only from human to human but from human to canine as well: A study published in the August issue of Biology Letters showed that when a man yawned in front of a group of dogs, 72 percent of them responded in kind.
-A hearty laugh a day can keep the doctor away. In 2005, researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine reported that after patients in the study were shown segments of a funny film, the inner lining of their blood vessels expanded an average of 22 percent. Such dilation plays an important role in improving cardiovascular health and overall well-being.
-Swimming is a great fitness activity. One reason is the water cools the body very efficiently, allowing for more exercise and less fatigue.

Knowing...

- 5 things I'm certain of:

There is a lot I'm certain of, including stuff to do with family, school, general life, social life's, politics etc.. but is that stuff really true? actually i don't know.. so five things that I definitely am certain of are:

1) I'm certain that i am going to be doing something medical for a career option. many reasons obviously to follow this up but not enough to explain it all.

2) I'm certain that I'm technically half Indian half African. all to do with my mums and dads side of the family.

3) Most definitely certain that i am a girl. appearances, feelings/emotion/ and all that.

4) I'm 100% sure that the 3rd of April is my birthday

5) finally I'm certain that for the past couple of years I've been living outside of England.

5 Things that I want to know:

Many things remain a blur to me and probably always will, the things that i would love an answer to are normally those type of questions that cant actually be answered. Other things i would like to like to know make me seem slightly off minded or just plain weird... So five things that I want to know are:

1) How do they actually carve those really detailed chair backs, and how long does it take? weird question, but i don't really know the answer...

2) Why cant we see the atoms in the air or the types of 'sciences' that are flying right past our faces?

3) Where does common knowledge come from?

4) Why do some people choose to think before acting and others do before thinking?

5) What makes us all emotional and where exactly does the emotion come from?

I love asking those weird questions to myself, whether they have to do with outer space or football or even myself, there's still actually so much i don't know about myself because it's so deep i would need to be analysed by a psychologist to understand the real qualities and behaviour characteristics i have.

The five things that i am most definitely certain of are mostly to do with my family or myself. for the first certainty i wrote that i was going to be doing something medical career wise. this is because I know in myself what i want to be doing. the feeling of passion is one of the greatest for me and that's how i feel about the career. Specifically what i want to be doing something medical is still fuzzy, however that's another area of the question and not necessarily the same one.

All of these certainties are actually do with me, that's way i know that they really are true. But why is it i know so much about myself and less about others? Is that because i intentionally pay more attention to myself than others? On the other hand if these 'certainties' were actually about other people i wouldn't be 100% sure.

Being sure of who you are is hard, but when it has to do with cultural background, it's pretty easy for me. I don't personally know my ancestors or great grandfathers, but i do know my mum and dad, where they came from and what they are and what their mums and dads were (and their mums and dads etc..) Therefore i know where my blood's from: half Indian and half African. I love knowing things like heritage and about myself, as well as other people, but i feel that if i don't know where exactly I'm from and what i am, then how do i know what i really am ( kind of)? I'm certain that I'm a girl. This is for many different reasons these can be appearances, emotions, different feeling, hormones. i know i am a girl and i was since in womb. I'm 100% sure that my birthday is the 3rd of April...why? because i have a birth certificate that says so. normally they aren't wrong, and if so then I've been celebrating my birthday on the wrong day for 16 years. i know in myself, where abouts I've been; what I've done and most of all why. I've been living outside of England for the past two years and i know this because i was physically there and i know in my head about what was going through me when i was and when i was settling in there, and when i was on the verge of coming back ( which i was more scared of than going there)

Five things that i want to know was hard... not just because i spent about half an hour wondering if i should do this in rough or not fist or whether i should just write it down as it came and sound like a complete air head. So i chose the second option. there are so many things i want to know but for some reason these ones came to me. For the first question- it didn't help that i was sitting in front of a ridiculously detailed carved chair. Even so I'm still wondering how on earth they carve the chairs so precisely and accurately. This is just one of the questions( this type) that I'm asking. this one just so happened to come to mind. Another question such as how on a table cloth do they distinguish the colors so accurately? these type of questions run through my head each and everyday, whether i can control it or not

I've had hundreds of bio, chem and physics lessons but never has it been explained why exactly in detail i cant really see any of it going thought the air. Being limited to just five questions or things that i want to know was harder than i thought but having know that there is so much more in the air than what you see, including pollutants, and different atoms from all sciences, but wouldn't be be pretty cool if we could actually see them? Knowledge comes from everywhere, including teachers, yourself, school in general, childhoods, home etc... But where does common knowledge come from? and what exactly is it? well searched, common knowledge is anything generally known to everyone. But what exactly does this mean? My question that i asked was where exactly does it come from? whether it comes from childhood or everyday life, it's an interesting subject to me.

Why do some people think before acting and other do before thinking? i wanted to know this because it could be a matter of confidence, in some cases- stupidity; whether or not you care at all or sometimes because you do care. For example i could cross the road but thinking before i do it, or i could shout something out and it could have come across as very offensive without thinking- or with thinking. Do some people think about 'it' for a reason and what reason is that?
Emotions are weird, cool, intelligent in some ways or another or even annoying- emotions may just come when you least want them to be there, for various reasons. People get emotional at all kinds of events. The experience of loosing someone has sometimes the worse kind of effect on some people, however for others- loosing a match could bring out the worst kind of emotion. For me obviously I've lost a lot of people and the emotions choose to just run wild. What i want to know is where they come from really? different things make different people tick, whether they are macho bike riders, maybe saying something the least bit offensive could do something, or the other way around.

Having to know something is good or bad, hard or easy but wanting to know something for me is ten times the effort. whether that has to do with my family background or something in Biology class. Knowing and wanting to know are very different that's the whole point.
